Introduced by the Republic and Canton of Geneva in 1886 as the ultimate standard in excellence and an emblem of Geneva’s fine watchmaking expertise, the Poinçon de Genève or Hallmark of Geneva, is synonymous with provenance, quality craftsmanship and reliability.
This contemporary reissue of an historic 1970s model remains true to the qualities that made the original an icon. Purity of line and slimness are paired in the bold monobloc tonneau shape with details like a fluted bezel and integrated bracelet for a robust, sporty, yet elegant aesthetic that transcends categories. Featuring a Maltese cross at 5 o'clock, the case boasts a sapphire glass caseback for admiring the self-winding calibre and its specially designed oscillating weight.
Heritage
For collectors of vintage watches, 222 is no ordinary number. It refers to a legendary reference that symbolised an era as well as a watershed moment in the history of Vacheron Constantin. With the 222 watch, released for its 222nd anniversary , 45 years ago, the Maison singularly expanded the previously limited vocabulary of the sports watch.
The watch’s bold design by Jorg Hysek marked a turning point in the history of the Manufacture. By integrating the sporting codes of watchmaking into an elegant piece that featured taut lines and sharp angles, it broke with existing conventions and shifted the Maison's stylistic evolution.
In March 2022, Vacheron Constantin reissued the legendary 222, launched in 1977 for its 222nd anniversary. A 37 mm-diameter piece, the Historiques 222 was crafted in 18K 3N yellow gold.
While retaining the distinctive design of the original 222 – along with its nostalgic charm – the 2025 stainless steel edition is resolutely contemporary. A watch embodying the Maison’s core values with sophisticated refinement, casual ease and uncompromising allegiance to the quest for excellence.
Highlights
On the dial, the date window is shifted towards the centre to avoid encroaching on the minute track. Vintage touches include the "AUTOMATIC" inscription font and the Super-LumiNova® coating of the hands and hour-markers (off-white by day and lime green by night) recalling the tritium used in earlier timepieces.
The caseback bears a signature commemorating Vacheron Constantin’s 270th anniversary. It has been fitted with a transparent sapphire crystal to reveal the automatic in-house Calibre 2455/2. Slightly smaller in diameter than its predecessor, the oscillating weight of this high-precision movement is engraved with the original 222 logo, and edged with notches reminiscent of the bezel.
The bracelet – now fastened with a triple-blade rather than a twin-blade clasp – has joints redesigned to conceal visible pins, and improved comfort thanks to better ergonomics.
The finishing boasts the meticulous attention to detail that Vacheron Constantin is known for. Vertical satin brushing and polished elements are combined to create mesmerising plays of light on the crown, bracelet and bezel.
