European Artistic Crafts Days April 2016

For the sixth consecutive year, Vacheron Constantin is renewing its support for the European Artistic Crafts Days. These European events are an opportunity for the public to discover artisans exercising age-old, sometimes little-known or forgotten skills. Through exceptional happenings held in France, Italy and Switzerland, the Manufacture reaffirms its commitment to perpetuating and spreading the renown of Artistic Crafts.

FRANCE

In France, the Maison is supporting the inaugural exhibition of the JEMA 2016, “L’Empreinte du Geste”, created in partnership with the National Institute of Artistic Crafts (INMA) and presented at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs from March 29th to April 3rd 2016. A human imprint illustrated in five stages by the geste (skilled craftsmanship) of 18 exceptional creative talents: the testimony of passion; the seal of creative design; the expression of invention; the sharing of a sense of beauty; and the memory of fruitful exchanges. This event built around an original concept affirms the contemporary nature of artistic crafts as well as their creative, social and economic role in envisaging the future.

ITALY

In Italy, in partnership with the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte and the Triennale di Milano, Vacheron Constantin will support the XXI Triennale International Exhibition Milan titled “21st Century. Design After Design” from April 2nd to September 12th through the “New Craft” pavilion in the Fabbrica del Vapore. This pavilion dedicated to excellence, curated by Stefano Micelli, highlights the encounter between technological innovation and expertise. From April 2nd to May 31st 2016, it will host the “Mutations” exhibition initially commissioned by Vacheron Constantin on the occasion of the European Artistic Crafts Days 2015 in partnership with the French National Institute of Arts and Crafts and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. “Mutations” highlights nine objects inspired by – and placed in perspective with – historical pieces belonging to the permament collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and created by collectives of artists and artisans from a wide range of horizons. This project instates a dialogue between artists and makers, while combining tradition with experimentation.

From April 1st to 3rd, the European Artistic Crafts Days (JEMA), under the patronage of the City of Milan, will also enable the public to admire demonstrations given by craftmasters in various studios of the 5Vie district that will be exceptionally open to the public.

SWITZERLAND

In Switzerland, Vacheron Constantin will support the Cantons of Vaud, Jura and Neuchâtel, as well as the City of Geneva. From April 15th to 17th, the Manufacture is proud to present the exhibition “Arts & Crafts & Design. Time according to Alessandro Mendini and his artisans” at the Geneva Art and History Museum, produced in partnership with the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte. Inspired by the theme of Time, this exhibition, embedded in contemporary design, showcases the dialogue between a famous designer and artist, Alessandro Mendini, and 13 Italian artisans.  For the second year running, Vacheron Constantin is also opening the doors of its historical site “en l’Ile” and offering visitors a chance to admire demonstrations by its artisans: a master guillocheur, a master enameller and a master watchmaker. The public will also have an opportunity to visit the “Elegance in Motion” (L’Elégance en mouvement) exhibition and its remarkable selection of timepieces from the Heritage collection of the Manufacture. In addition, the JEMA 2016 will feature open days held by more than 50 institutions and artisans’ studios.

In the Canton of Vaud, from April 15th to 17th, 40 different ateliers will be open to the public; and the Espace Arlaud in Lausanne will also host demonstrations given by artisans, including a Vacheron Constantin master-engraver.

From April 22nd to 24th, in the Canton of Neuchâtel, 20 ateliers will  open their doors, with around 30 different crafts represented, including enamellers, engravers and gemsetters. Two schools providing training in artistic crafts will also be involved in this event. On April 23rd and 24th, the Canton of Jura will showcase seven crafts. The Jura Art and History Museum in Delémont and the Hôtel-Dieu Museum in Porrentury will also take part in these artistic days by providing a glimpse behind the scenes and exhibiting objects embodying artisanal expertise.
